Old gas furnace and air conditioner evaporator coil
This system had served the homeowners well since 2002 but the evaporator coil that sits on top of the furnace had started leaking Freon. It seems counterintuitive, but the less Freon in the system the colder the remaining Freon gets. Eventually, it forms ice inside the evaporator cabinet which blocks air flow thru the system which causes even more ice to form. You can see the puddle on the floor around the furnace where the ice has melted and dripped thru the furnace onto the floor.

New gas furnace and air conditioner evaporator coil
This is a beautiful installation! Notice the furnace sits on a box that allows return air to enter the furnace thru both the bottom and the side. This increases air flow while decreasing the amount of electricity the blower motor consumes. The box is sitting on rubber pads so the system is not in contact with the concrete floor.

Old air conditioner
This baby has seen better days. It was still running when we replaced it with an American Standard 17 SEER2 multi-speed air conditioner but it was suffering from a loss of Freon. We put it out of its misery.

New air conditioner
This is the magic machine that changes how much air conditioning it delivers based on how hot it is outside. It's not only suer efficient and great at removing humidity but is also very, very quiet.
